In the CNN docuseries, the Nineties, Amy Finnerty remembers her earliest days at MTV and how she insisted the video for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" be played, even putting her own job on the line. Obviously, the risk paid off; Nirvana went from obscure Washington grunge band to overnight sensations. Kurt Cobain brought to the table not only his ability to scream on pitch but a look that was completely different from other rock singers at the time. He didn't have big hair or wear leather, but was able to inspire an entire grunge movement. In honor of the legendary singers 52nd birthday, we look back and observe the five lessons of grunge style Kurt Cobain taught us.
1. Cardigans Rule!

Hailing from the Pacific Northwest, it makes sense why Cobain was always layering with an old cardigan or worn in flannel.
2. Sunglasses are cool in any weather.

Whether walking the red carpet with Courtney Love, giving an interview on MTV, or just hanging out, Cobain was always sporting red or white circular frames like these.
3. Your hair is just a canvas

Hair grows back! So don't be afraid to try a new cut or color once in a while. Kurt dyed his hair all different colors, from blue to pink to brown and back to blonde.
4. Jeans: The holier the better

Who else hates buying jeans? The whole process of trying them on and then finally breaking them in is exhausting, but having to get new ones every time they rip is just too much. Be like Kurt and break the cycle by wearing your holes proudly.
5. Dress codes mean nothing.

Remember when Kurt showed up to the MTV's Video Music Awards in a striped t-shirt and ripped jeans? Definition of a power move right there.
