Thanksgiving Movie Marathon

For those who are staying home during their Thanksgiving break and are in desperate need of a brain break from college applications, like me, a movie marathon is exactly what the doctor ordered. It is my personal tradition to watch movies that have nothing to do with Thanksgiving, lots of tried and true classics that always helps make the transition from fall to winter much easier. Seven long days to be filled with watching some of my favorite movies that I never have the time for is always the best part of the break.
Monday, or as I like to call it, Musical Monday starts off the week with...Musicals!
Across the Universe
I watch this movie at least seven times a year, and not just because of my undying love for Max. This modern jukebox musical follows Lucy and Jude's love story throughout the craziness that was 1960s America. With lots of memorable side characters, diverse casting, queer leads, Bono cameos, and a score made up entirely of Beatles discography, this movie was totally ahead of its time at its 2007 release.
Jersey Boys
While it may not be as good as the stage musical, Clint Eastwood's pastel tinted 1950s dream is just pleasing to the eye and fun to watch. Fall back in love with The Four Seasons annoyingly catchy tunes, as you see the story behind the songs.
Chicago
This Thanksgiving, I'm mostly thankful for Renee Zelleweger and Catherine Zeta Jones being casted as murderous flappers in this 2002 CLASSIC. Not to mention the all star performances by Queen Latifa and Richard Gere.
Tuesday is for the cult classics! Any of the following are good suggestions.
Almost Famous
I have never felt more seen by a movie than the first scene of Almost Famous, when the camera pans over a sunny San Diego as Christmas music plays. Music, philosophy, and some great groupie fashion make this movie so easy to rewatch.
The Royal Tenenbaums
Disfunctional family seems so much more manageable in Wes Anderson's symmetric, pastel, and visually ironic Tenenbaum family reunion. From the all star cast to the pitch perfect soundtrack, this movie makes you want to curl up on the couch and be thankful you're not in the Tenebaum family.
Napoleon Dynamite
Who doesn't love Napoleon Dynamite? It's the perfect movie for when you just need to laugh at someone getting hit with a steak.
Wednesday is reserved for Romantic comedies!
Bridget Jones Diary
I want to personally thank Sharon McGuire for her decision to cast both Colin Firth and Hugh Grant in the same movie. Other than the way it seamlessly translates Pride and Prejudice from the Georgian England countryside to 1990s London, the best part of Bridget Jones Diary is her funny and weird friends.
Set it Up
Glenn Powell is so adorably sarcastic, and Zoey Dutch's shiny optimism make them a modern classic duo. Also Taye Diggs and Lucy Liu are hilarious on their own.
About Time
Something about this movie is just so serene and enjoyable, it's the perfect food coma movie. Of all of Rachel McAdam's rom-coms where she dates a time travelerx, this one reigns supreme.
As per our family tradition, we usually watch the original Star Wars Trilogy all day as we finish cooking Thanksgiving food and eating, so that keeps Thursday's prime movie viewing hours occupied. But Friday is a breather from movies, and I usually spend the day after Thanksgiving bingewatching some shorter television shows, most currently I'm watching "The End of The F***ing World: Season Two and "Atypical".
Back to our regularly scheduled programming, on Saturday I'm tackling dramas.
The Shawshank Redemption
This movie comes on TV at least once a moth and I always drop everything to watch it whenever it comes on. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman spend over 30 years trying to survive life in the Shawshank Prison.
The Godfather
Undeniably, one of the greatest movies of all time, The Godfather has all the drama, action, and romance you need. Who doesn't love baby faced Al Pacino in his most iconic role?
Sunday, December 1st, is the perfect day to binge watch Christmas movies!
Scrooged
I'm shocked and appalled that more people don't know and love this movie. Bill Murray screaming at every other cast member plus really funny Christmas ghosts equals prime holiday comedy.
Jingle All the Way
Arnold Schwarzenegger drives around the city, competing with Sinbad to find the seasons hottest Christmas toy. The best part? Schwarzenegger annoying neighbor attempting to seduce his wife.
It's a Wonderful Life
I'm so excited for December 1st, so that it's finally socially acceptable for me to do my Jimmy Stewart impersonation again. It's my favorite part of Christmas. The age old story of love and humanity is the perfect way to end our finale.
