If you're not a fan of cheesy rom-coms, this movie is not for you. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is probably one of the cheesiest movies ever made, second only to maybe Xanadu. However, I love cheese and camp, so I thoroughly enjoyed this classic romantic comedy from beginning to end. Let's begin our discussion!
Acting; 10/10
With films like Almost Famous and Dazed and Confused under their belts, there's no disputing that Kate Hudson and Matthew Mcconaughey are both good actors capable of more serious roles. In these roles, however, they are just having fun with the larger than life characters. The whole movie, the two are just competing with each other, trying to see who can be the biggest personality on screen. It's Mcconaughey at his coolest and Hudson at her craziest.
+2 Bonus Points for Jen Barkley and Lilith working in the same office
Costuming: 8/10
To be fair, the early 2000s were the ugliest years in terms of fashion trends, so it makes sense why some of the characters make... questionable fashion choices. Overall, the outfits weren't terrible, but that yellow dress! I LOVE! It's so iconic, that even having never seen the movie I was able to recognize an exact replica when I was thrift shopping.
+2 Bonus points for the coordinating Burberry outfits
Set Design: 6/10
If this movie doesn't make you want to work for a fashion magazine in Manhattan, you may need to see a doctor. I love the differences between the magazine and advertising offices. Andie and her friends work in a spacious, naturally lit office with all the best dressed women in New York, while Ben works in a dim, wood paneled, old fashioned building that probably hasn't been redecorated since the early 1960s. Why is there a pool table in the middle of the office? Also, I seriously doubt that Andie could afford to live in a building with a doorman on her writer's salary.
Soundtrack: 10/10
The nostalgia hits like a truck in this movie. I was born in 2002, so all the songs remind me of kindergarten, and still manage to be bops today. "Kiss Me" will be stuck in my head for the next week.
Final Score: 8.5/10
This maybe a controversial score, since people who love this movie would expect a 10, and more "serious" movie fans would love to tear this movie apart, but I thought it was just a great film. It made me smile and I had fun watching it, which is what movies are supposed to do. If you are in need of a Friday pick me up, I would highly recommend.
