With school coming to a close and the stress of finals and spring concerts growing, I've been listening to music as a way to clear my mind and focus. The following playlist is filled with all of my favorite songs to listen to this month. Complete with classics and some brand new bops, this playlist is perfect for studying at your local Starbucks or dancing by yourself in your bedroom, these songs are sure to have your foot tapping.
1. Remember When by Wallows
Best Lyric: "And I couldn't find the right words to use, but I knew that you knew"
Why it Rocks: Wallows released their debut album "Nothing Happens" on March 22nd and I've been absolutely obsessed with it since then. This song is one of my favorites and I think you'll enjoy it as well.
2. I Love LA by Starcrawler
Best Lyric: Talking to a friend/He said he'd never ever wanna/Ever come back again
Why it Rocks: Starcrawler reminds me a lot of Joan Jett-ish type music so if you're into that you'll probably like them.
3. Sucker by The Jonas Brothers
Best Lyric: "And you're making the typical me break my typical rules"
Why it Rocks: The Jonas Brother's are back! I know I'm late, but I was surprised that the Jonas Brother's first song since I was in elementary school actually didn't suck.
4. Bad Guy by Billie Eilish
Best Lyric: " My mommy likes to sing along with me, but she won't sing this song"
Why it Rocks: Regardless of what you think of Eilish, its undeniably impressive for a 17 year old girl to write and produce her own album. This song is a total bop, and I know because even my mom likes it.
5. Almost (Sweet Music) by Hozier
Best Lyric: "I've got some colour back, she thinks so, too. I laugh like me again, she laughs like you"
Why it Rocks: Not only does Hozier's beautiful vocals make this song stand out, but if you listen to the lyrics you can see he uses up to 17 jazz song titles to complete them.
6. Dangerous by Kolars
Best Lyric: "Is it dangerous to live like us?"
Why it Rocks: I LOVE the Kolars. As if the lyrics and music wasn't great already, prepare to lose it when you see Laura Brown tap dance on the drum head.
7. Missed Connection by The Head and the Heart
Best Lyric: " First you see it, then you feel it, now I'm caught and we're making our own thing. Now I'm following you out to the coast"
Why it Rocks: I have been waiting for The Head and The Heart to put out new music since "Signs of Light" in 2016 which I listened to the entire summer of freshman year, and their new singles do not disappoint.
8. Neon Me Out by Sego
Best Lyric: " Turn it up / Enough / To corrupt the plot / You’re clocking out"
Why it Rocks: If you're into early Beck music you will fall in love with this song. Sego rants about everything wrong with Generation Z in a dead pan voice with a catchy guitar riff, in a fashion very similar to Beck's "Loser".
9. Loner by The Drums
Best Lyric: " And I don't want to be alone, and I am scared of all the people in the world"
Why it Rocks: I'm all about catchy songs that help artists express their vulnerability and insecurities.
10. When the Lights Go Out by Crybaby
Best Lyric: "There’s a beauty in this; a privilege in parting I know."
Why it Rocks: A sugary sweet love song that has an obvious nod to 1950s serenades.
11. Summer by Imagine Dragons
Best Lyric: "Paint me all your pictures, hang them on my wall. Show me all your colors show me all."
Why it Rocks: From arguably the best Imagine Dragons album, Summer stands out as a perfect summer jam, meant for driving past the coast with your windows down.
12. Berkeley's On Fire by SWMRS
Best Lyric: "There's plenty different versions, on and off your TV screen, of us annoyed. The property's destroyed"
Why it Rocks: SWMRS bring back classic punk rock in their fourth album Berkeley's on Fire. This song will have you banging your head in no time.
13. Paperback Writer by The Beatles
Best Lyric: If you really like it you can have the rights. It could make a million for you overnight.
Why it Rocks: It's The Beatles, so you can't really debate that it rocks. I personally love this song because it reminds me of driving into LA (I'm not sure why} and it just makes me happy,
14. Celebrity Skin by Hole
Best Lyric: "I'm all I want to be: a walking study in demonology"
Why it Rocks: I've been listening to a lot of Courtney Love lately, and I'm really into this song because of it's "try me" attitude.
15. Tunnel by Frankie Cosmos
Best Lyric: " I’m having the time of my life, each time that I look into your eyes. You look back at me, we really see each other."
Why it Rocks: After all the heavy punk and rock sounds of the playlist, Frankie Cosmos' Tunnel feels like a breath of fresh air with its simple tune and piano accompaniment.
Enjoy!
