As if the charts weren't already flooded with love songs, this time of year they seem to be playing almost aggressively. If you need some music to drown out all the declarations of love, these are the songs for you. From sad songs to listen to while thinking of your unrequited love to angry girl rock to bang your head along with to just happy songs to remind you that Valentine's Day is only 24 hours long, this playlist has it all.
1. Washing Machine Heart by Mitski
Best Line: "I didn't wear my usual lipstick, I thought maybe we would kiss tonight"
Why it Rocks: Mitski's sugary sweet vocals serve as an explosive contrast to the buzzing and robotic baseline in this heartbreaking track about unrequited love.
2. Star-crossed Losers by The Fratellis
Best Line: "He could feel something pulling on his sleeve, he had the strangest sense that he was Adam, she was Eve."
Why it rocks: The Fratelli's song writing skills shine through in this song about a man who sees the worst in everything and pushes away his chance at love.
3. How Can You Really by Foxygen
Best Line: "When I wake up in the morning, how long until you roll in my dreams"
Why it Rocks: Foxygen has a unique sound I can best describe as a cross between The Zombies, Electric Light Orchestra, and the Velvet Underground. The spirit of the three groups is captured in this song about rejection by way of haunting melodies, enchanting percussion, and an emphasis on keyboard.
4. Handsome by The Vaccines
Best Line: "If my body is a temple you can worship at my feet but I may kick you in the teeth, sir"
Why it Rocks: This song starts off like a bullet out of a gun, a loud bang with unbelievable built up pressure and doesn't slow down as the lead singer drips with arrogance that rubs off the more you listen.
5. Seashore by the Regrettes
Best Line: "No I'm not a helpless baby, not waiting on you to come save me"
Why it Rocks: Honestly, every single song in the Regrettes' debut album, "Feel Your Feelings Fool" makes you want to punch a wall and scream from the top of a building. This particular song is the perfect example of the bands retro sound which endears them to classic rock fans and the modern twist that makes them fresh to a newer generation.
6. Troublemaker by Weezer
Best Line: "When it's party time, like 1999, I'll party by myself because I'm such a special guy"
Why it Rocks: Maybe it's because I wasn't alive during Weezer's Hey-Day at were the one of the hottest post-punk rock bands in the 90s, but I always think of them as a nerdy band that writes Star Wars references into their lyrics (i.e. "Q.B. Blitz"), but this song is a reminder of how hard they can rock, with a rocking rhythm and defiant lyrics.
7. Need a Little Time by Courtney Barnett
Best Line: "You seem to have the weight of the world, upon your bony shoulders, well hold on"
Why it Rocks: Nobody does melancholy quite like Courtney Barnett with her signature deadpan singing voice and somber guitar. A relatively simple tune, this introspective song is best to listen to on a rainy day.
8. If You Know That I'm Lonely by Fur
Best Line: "If you can show me that you're thoughts are all holy, I'll pretend that you know me like you've always wanted to"
Why it Rocks: There's an obvious early Beatles' influence here by way of bluesy guitar, and the two part harmony that pairs perfectly with the lyrics about loneliness.
9. Drop that Guillotine by Peach Pit
Best Line: "You sure now how to drop that guillotine on me, though you would never want to see me bleed"
Why it Rocks: What I find most impressive about Peach Pit, apart from their lyrical guitar playing, is their ability to tell stories in their songs. This one is about a boy who's best friend falls in love with the girl he loves, and just dealing with how life is just funny like that.
10. Don't Save Me by Haim
Best Line: "Longing for what was to come, now I'm dreaming 'bout the way I was"
Why it Rocks: I love the uniqueness of this love song. Haim sings about loving someone and wanting to be with them, but then states that if they can't handle a relationship, then "don't save me". Not very often in love songs do we get to see the woman calling the shots and writing the conditions for a relationship and for that we should applaud the sisters.
11. Best Friend by Rex Orange County
Best Line: "I'll be your biggest fan and you'll be mine, but i still want to break your heart and make you cry"
Why it Rocks: I'll be honest and tell you that I don't care for Rex Orange County, but this song has earned a special place in my heart thanks to the marching band section. Not since Heath Ledger sang Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" in 10 Things I Hate About You has a marching band added to the romance of to the romance of a song.
12. All My Friends are Falling in Love by The Vaccines
Best Line: "I wanted you to think I could be chic, but we went home on the back of the bus"
Why it Rocks: We've all been there, when you feel like you're the only person in the history of the world to go to a dance by yourself or when you can't find anyone to go to the movies with. The Vaccines capture that awful feeling in this tune with a catchy chorus that will have you dancing by yourself in no time.
13. Destroyer by Saint Motel
Best Line: "Give it a rest, I'm well aware it was a doomed affair from the start"
Why it Rocks: I first fell in love with Saint Motel because of the way they are able to incorporate a jazz sound into Indie Rock, and this song is one example of how they effortlessly break the mold.
14. Don't Stop Me Now by Queen
Best Line: "Burning through the sky, 200 degrees that's why they call me Mr. Fahrenheit
Why it Rocks: Well first of all, it's Freddy Mercury doing what Freddy Mercury does best, hyping himself and those around him up. This is definitely my hairbrush song, and by hairbrush song, I mean those songs you dance around and sing along with as you get ready in the morning.
